CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Crow Armbrust
AGE: 19-20
CANON: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

CANON HISTORY:
Erebonian History: Crow Armbrust Edition

CANON PERSONALITY:

Crow Armbrust is an interesting soul at Thors Military Academy. Laid back, seemingly lazy, carefree, and with a gambling habit to boot, it's amazing he was even accepted into a military school. But where you would expect him to be comic relief or even the butt of everyone's jokes, there's actually a lot more to him than what's seen at first glance - so, so much more. Crow Armbrust is a man of many layers, ranging from both a very caring person to someone who has clearly been pushed as far as he can go. A man whose true jovial personality is often choked by a thirst for revenge and a corrupted sense of justice.

At his core, Crow is a good person. He may not always be on your side or even doing the right things morally, and he may be a bit selfish in his goals, but he has always done it with the hope of bringing peace back to Erebonia. Misguided as it may be, and perhaps a little manipulated by people in power, he has always kept to that ideal. His main mantra is that he has to "clean up" the mess he's made if he wants to finish the "game" that he started the moment he pulled the trigger to kill Osborne, and it's something he's open to even Rean about.

The Crow Armbrust that we see at his most honest is a cheerful, laid back man who's notorious for being a slacker. Clever and witty, he's never without his fair share of one-liners and cheery disposition, and it almost seems like nothing truly upsets him. Even if someone insults him, he tends to take it in stride and even fire back a carefully hidden insult of his own, smile plastered across his face. It's rare to ever see him in anything but a good mood, and he seems to be just pouring life out of him whenever he speaks. There's some kind of energy he's got that keeps him from getting too down about things, and it's something that Class VII (especially the boys) really need amongst all the students there with family issues (and believe me, there's a lot.)

While technically classified as a flirt, Crow's often one to tease the people he likes, or even the people he just wants to get a rise out of. If you're one of his friends or someone who's a prime target for teasing, you can definitely place bets on him giving you some kind of nickname. Crow was born a middle class citizen, so while he's never necessarily rude to people of noble birth, he does tend to tease them or even poke at the more privileged boys of the group. If someone's trying to catch their breath on a long trek, Crow'll be the first to chime up and tell the "city slickers" to keep their legs moving. When Alisa remarks that her family's company has some new technological advancement that she knows how to use? Crow'll be the first to muse that her house has to have at least one of those (because she's rich).

But speaking of flirting, Crow... for all he's played up as a 'playboy', is actually quite respectable to most girls he meets. Sure, he loves a woman's figure like any sane man would, but he never pushes the line too far nor does he eye up his female classmates. Hell, his best friend is a lesbian, and she's the one reason why Crow has no girlfriends - she pretty much sweeps them off their feet and away from him, much to his chagrin. In fact, he tends to flirt more with the guys of Class VII than the girls, probably for lack of competition and also because it gets a rise out of them easier. Especially easily flustered ones like Machias and Elliot.

Crow is also extremely good with children. He never talks down to them or treats them like they're too young to handle being treated like an adult, and he'll often be the first one to offer to play games with them or entertain them. This may result in minor level gambling, as he canonically has bought candy to use as gambling. The only thing is - he will lose on purpose, in order to give the kids both confidence and the candy.

For someone who seems to try so hard to be detached from those around him at Thors, he certainly slid into the role of mentor for Class VII (and Rean Schwarzer) in both school life and even during the war. During school, he's Class VII's senior, and he's often got knowledge of things they're unsure of, or is there to help them from getting way over their heads in thinking about the big questions. He's someone who, despite his halcyon moments, is reliable where it matters, and he's always there to catch them if they stumble. After all, he is the guy who swooped in with the foundation for planning their School Festival event (with help from Towa, of course), offering to pull all-nighters with Elliot in order to get the concert preparation done. He's willing to put forth effort where it counts.

But it's likely this was somewhat unintended, because when his ARCUS links with the others connecting their heartbeats and putting them all into sync, it's all he can do to keep himself from looking completely crushed, knowing he's going to have to betray them. Guess he tried so hard to fool people into thinking he was a good guy that he, in turn, ended up making meaningful connections! THE DUALITY OF MAN.

And if you think he stopped that the moment he became a terrorist, oh no. Because even then, when Rean and Crow are at odds with each other, unable to see eye to eye with their ideals or by extraneous circumstances, Crow's always, always offering Rean advice. Even when Rean's a prisoner on their airship, and they're trying to prevent Rean from escaping, Crow drops hints on how to make his Divine Knight even stronger. Keep in mind, Rean and Crow are currently in an ongoing competition of "My Robot is Better Than Your Robot" among other things, like being on opposite sides of a Civil War. And here is Crow giving him trade secrets like it's nothing. And even after that, Crow's always stopping by at various places during their journey to check on them, and especially to encourage Rean to reach even harder to beat him. He may not have always shown it at the Academy, but he sure lived up to being the mentor and coach that Rean needed.

Crow's definitely what you would call the 'mood maker' of the boys of Class VII. Out of all of them, he's the one that's most likely to start up a conversation, shooting the breeze with normal topics of conversation that most teenage boys would have. He's not afraid of social class, and he's definitely not someone who worries about fitting in with a new group of classmates, as he definitely seems unbothered when he's brought into Class VII. Heck, even when his fellow classmates talk to him about moving into the Class VII dorm, he shrugs it off with a smile and says they'll miss him before long. It's not unfounded, either, he truly is that easy of a person to get along with, and certainly not lacking any self confidence, either.

"Heh, it's okay. You don't have to hold back your joy at getting to live with a cool second year like me."

This continues well into the Erebonian Civil War. Even when he's with the Noble Alliance, he's made plenty of impressions onboard the ship. One notable example is McBurn, a man who has undeniably infinite power, but prefers to avoid fighting if he feels like the fight wouldn't be worth it. He seems to respect Crow considerably, to the point of even stepping aside in testing Rean's demon power himself, and playfully stating that this one belongs to Crow. Crow, cheerfully, agrees and takes up on that.

But, as always with morally grey characters, there is a darker side to him as well.

While Crow's friendlier personality may be his most 'honest' self, there is a side of him that's been twisted. A side of him that he had to fabricate in order to carry out his plans. You can say that C is that side of him, as he tends to wear it best when he's behind a mask. After all, C had no problems holding hostages in the mine in Roer, C didn't see an issue with firing the Railway Guns at a conference in Crossbell.

So how about that thirst for revenge? If there's one thing Crow's willing to throw his friendships on the line for, it's wanting justice served to those who wronged him or someone he loved. To the point of actually being hypocritical and putting those he cares about (but won't admit it) in harm's way or even wronging them in return. It's definitely not one of his best traits, but it is one Crow is self-aware of. He knows his reason for going up against the Chancellor is petty, and even states that his backstory isn't all that special ("Open a history book and you'll find a dozen others just like it"). But he'd committed to that goal when he was thirteen, and with all the hardships he went through and all the trials he had to endure, he was going to make sure that all of it amounted to something. Even if it meant throwing Rean's friendship away.

Crow Armbrust, for all his laidback and seemingly carefree personality, is actually very, very calculated. This is the man who started a quest for revenge with some nudging from a rich Duke and the funds to do so all at the age of thirteen. He's smart - almost too smart, as during his time at Thors he was able to outsmart Chancellor Osborne's entire Intelligence Division, even one of his spies who stayed in the same dorm as him. It had gotten to the point where Millium, said spy, had thought the whole thing was a red herring, only to find out too late that Crow had slipped under her radar.

But perhaps his "worst" trait...

He's bad with money. Crow is a gambler at heart, taught by his grandpa and always one itching to pull the lever at slots. It's how he always saw the whole situation with Osborne too - one big bet that his grandfather lost against Osborne, and everything he's doing now is an all-or-nothing shot to win that back. He's prone to not returning money he owes (although that's mostly with Rean), and his luck is always terrible when it comes to placing bets on things like horse racing.

Still, despite that, he'll always fall victim to it - the calling of winning it big for a man who lost everything is just too great.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

ARCUS Unit
The ARCUS unit is a handheld multi-purpose device that serves as the primary source of 'magic' in the canon. It's a compact 'orbment', which are devices that let you channel the energy from magical rocks called quartz and be able to use spells. It doesn't take magical prowess or special birth to use something like this. It's magic for the practical age!

They can also function as phones, clocks, and have the ability to form Combat Links to sync with anyone in battle. Combat Links are a special connection between two people in a battle that allows them to sync their hearts and souls to perform attacks more effectively. It sort of feeds off instinct, and the stronger the connection with the person, the stronger the Combat Link. The ARCUS channels this and allows two people to have this kind of connection.

ARTS Although not with nearly as much efficiency as someone like Elliot or Emma, he seems to do relatively okay, with his main elements being Time (dark) with a side element of Water/Ice, which makes him very effective for stopping enemies in their tracks.

His Master Quartz is Cypher, and it allows him to perform these arts:

ARTS
  • Soul Blur- Available from the start (level 3). Hits one enemy and brings them to their knees and near-faint.

  • Demonic Scythe- Available from the start (level 3). Hits a group of enemies and has a chance to knock them out or kill them instantly.

  • Chrono Break- Gained at level 4. Slows down enemies and can halt them completely for a little while.

  • Grim Butterfly- Gained at level 5. Dark butterflies surround the enemy and can inflict Nightmare Status.

INNATE POWER
Being a Master Quartz, Cypher also has the ability to cause stats down (weakened attack/defenses/etc) of an enemy just by having it equipped, no matter what weapon Crow uses. There's also a chance of it triggering an insta-death (or near death, depending on the target) on enemies by having it equipped as well.

SEPARATE QUARTZ:*
*these are quartz in Crow's ARCUS but not arts that come from Cypher's innate skills.
  • Aqua Bleed- A low level water move that shoots a jet of water at an enemy for damage. It's not the most powerful spell you'll ever see, but it's definitely one of the least lethal ones.

  • Frost Edge- A medium level ice move that covers the enemy in frost for damage when it breaks apart. Can also be used to just make ice.

WEAPON: DUAL PISTOLS
Crow's first, but secondary weapon. He's a very skilled marksman and has actually earned one of the top scores in the ranged combat training of Thor's Military Academy. His guns operate by orbal energy, and such, shoot orbal bullets. So basically, they're bullets made by the in-game magical technology, so he doesn't have to worry about things like reloading. He can use both simultaneously, and each one is of a different size and shape he chose specifically. His guns also connect to his elemental affinity, as he can shoot ice from them as well as inflict Nightmare status.

CRAFTS:
  • FREEZE SHOT - it's basically what it says on the tin. A shot of ice (usually in the form of a ball) from both of his guns held up together. Capable of freezing an opponent in its tracks.

  • WILD CARD - Crow draws a card that can either protect an ally (boost defense) or inflict death (or near death) on an enemy. It will never do the reverse or do a bad status effect to an ally, it's just random which one he can pull out at the time.

  • RAPID VOLLEY - Crow inflicts a series of gunshots that can hinder an enemy's movement if they hit on target.

  • NIGHTMARE TRIGGER - Crow aims carefully and shoots a nightmare bullet that can trap you in nightmares and inflict another status effect.

S-CRAFT*:
  • CROSS RAVEN - Crow shoots out dozens of bullets inflicted with a dark energy (see, Nightmare Trigger) that fly around and hover over the enemy. They will stay there until he snaps his fingers, which they'll fly towards the enemy and explode. It's pretty extra.

*S-crafts are like limit-breaks, and thus, take a lot of energy to execute. Because of this, they are once-a-day things that use up all or most of Crow's power, and are intended to be used when there is no other option available.

WEAPON: DOUBLE SABRE
Crow's double sabre is a weapon taken from Erebonian's Dark Ages (whatever that means) and is his primary weapon, although not the one he starts out using. It's a double bladed sword with the handle in the middle that Crow can not only carry with ease, but use pretty efficiently.

CRAFTS-
  • CRIMINAL EDGE- Crow's double sabre glows as he prepares to swing it, creating a shockwave that knocks people back as well as slices at them for damage.

  • ARC SLASH- The same motion as Criminal Edge, but it doesn't have the pushback power of it and instead can impede someone from attacking right after.

  • BLADE THROW-
  • This one's pretty self explanatory. Crow throws his blade out and it twirls to strike its foe, only to return to him like a boomerang. Don't ask how it works.

S-CRAFT
  • DEADLY CROSS - Crow holds his double sabre back as he prepares to lunge, springing himself forward and striking the enemy once and moving right past them. He lands behind them, turning around and in turn, turning his sabre around for another swing, this time sending a red energy-like X at the target which in turn destroys them.

DIVINE KNIGHT: ORDINE
Not only is Crow skilled in both long & short range weapons on TOP of magic, but he's also a pilot for a large mecha. Yeah, this guy's list keeps going on.

Crow is what we call an "Awakener", meaning he passed the trials and tests in order to earn the right to pilot what we call a "Divine Knight". A Divine Knight is basically a giant robotic mechanism with fully working joints and a conscious, being able to be piloted from a small cavity in the chest area where a chair sits for its pilot. Crow acquired his Divine Knight, Ordine, when he was just 16 years old, and has 3 years worth of experience piloting it--so needless to say, he's very apt at it.

Ordine is sentient, and as such, has a personality of his own. He's often kind and courteous to both his pilot and people around him, and would do anything to look out for Crow. They seem to have a good relationship, as Ordine calls him 'Crow' instead of the default title of 'Awakener' that some Knights use. This is likely something that happened over his time as an Awakener. Most knights are programmed with answers and responses to start, but as they regain memories of their past, they become more human in both speech and nature.

Each Divine Knight is unique in their own way with what they can do and how they function. Crow's knight, Ordine, is specifically trained to wield the double sabre made of Zemurian Ore - a metal that is pretty much the strongest substance in their world - much like his own, and as such, many of his attacks do seem to mirror the ones Crow uses.

CRAFTS-

  • CRIMINAL EDGE- This works the same way Crow's does listed above, with the slash of the double sabre that knocks you back, except Ordine's will be a lot more effective. Since he's a giant robot.

  • ARC SLASH- Just like Crow's as well, but has a chance to hit your weak spot specifically.

  • BLADE THROW-
  • Much like Crow's, but this time the blade is much bigger. So. Big boomerang.

S-CRAFTS-

  • DEADLY END- This is pretty much Ordine's version of Deadly Cross, so imagine the power Crow does on average and multiply it since it's a giant robot mecha. It's pretty intense, and Crow will certainly hesitate to use this should it ever be regained.

  • DEADLY DOMINATION-This can only be used if Rean is around and also has his Divine Knight, but just for completion's sake, it will be put here. Both of them attack with their S-Crafts, Ordine doing Deadly End while Valimar does Enlightened Domination. The attack connects via their link and the results are pretty much unparalleled in power.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Crow Armbrust
AU AGE: 21
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
For the most part, Crow’s appearance will be exactly the same as his canon appearance, right down to his fashion sense (See: dumb headbands). However, since they’re not technically natural pigments, Crow will start out with black hair and brown eyes, as his white/silver hair and red eyes will be regains. He grays super early in his life, who knew!

Also, while he will definitely be muscular in Recolle (he goes to the gym to keep fit), he won’t be quite the level of buff that Crow the Terrorist is known for. This will be a regain as well, so he'll have fun looking forward to that.

Finally, he won't have a chest/back scar from where he got impaled, but that too will return with time.

AU HISTORY:
Crow Armbrust was born in Portland, Maine to his two parents. However, before he could even remember them, they died in an accident and Crow's grandfather took up raising him as best as he could. Being on the board for the city of Portland, they lived pretty well financially, so taking on a child wasn't too much of a burden on Grandpa Armbrust.

The majority of Crow's school life was relatively standard. He went to school, made friends, and did his homework just like any other kid his age. There were obvious things he couldn't do like other kids - Mother's Day and Father's Day were pretty awkward, but he and his grandfather celebrated nonetheless. He enjoyed his grandfather's company too, and was taught how to play cards as rewards for doing his homework. They'd often look at the paper together and Crow would help his grandfather choose a horse to bet on, and would always be allowed to scratch off the numbers on the lottery tickets. At Christmas, Grandpa Armbrust even got him some of his own to scratch off (although Grandpa would cash in the winnings since he was too young.)

He was also taught how to cook through his grandfather, learning how to make all kinds of seafood dishes that grandpa had grown up on. Fried fish, lobster rolls, and grilling (usually seafood). Honorable non-seafood mentions go to coffee and steak. As far as his living situation, Crow really had it lucky that he was being taught things like this.

They went camping, they went on hikes, they went fishing... and Grandpa Armbrust taught him everything he'd need to know about basic first aid. Crow took special interest in this, always making sure they were all packed up should anything ever happen. Both out of care for his grandfather, and it gave him a sense of responsibility for someone's life. That if something were to happen, Crow could then help that person. From a scrape to a broken bone, it didn't matter to this little child.

As Crow grew up, he certainly entered the stage of teenager that most people experience: rebellion. He had a certain number of phases, ranging from name changing (There was a "Raven Armbrust" phase, believe me) to random mood swings. Thankfully, Grandpa Armbrust didn't really put up with it, and thanks to that level of authority, he grew to have not just idolization, but respect for him. Their bond was practically inseparable.

But in Crow's late high school years, Grandpa's health declined. Crow spent more time after school going home to take care of his grandfather than he did joining clubs or extra curricular activities. Friends he used to hang out with now just became school acquaintances, and the realization of what was happening more than ever started sinking in. As high school came to an end, so did the stability of Crow's life.

It wasn't long after his high school graduation that Grandpa Armbrust passed away peacefully in his sleep, with Crow having to take up the responsibility of ensuring he was properly buried and had a nice funeral. Not having much family to go on, he called in what family friends he could remember, held a quick service, and said his goodbyes.

He never really left much time for himself to grieve, and within the year, he'd arranged all his grandfather's possessions (that he wasn't taking with him) to be locked in a storage unit, and then took his own belongings and headed to Recolle to get away from the coast that reminded him so much of his grandfather.

Using some of his grandfather's inheritance, he was able to get to Recolle and enroll in the university there. While his first year was all gen eds, he didn't really find a major for himself until about halfway through. All the things he'd learned from his grandfather's camping trips suddenly hit him like a brick, and he quickly structured his next semester's schedule to allow for Paramedicine courses with the intent on becoming an EMT. His passion showed in his grades too - while his gen eds often were passable at best with questionable attendance, Crow shines in the classes he's most interested in, earning top scores and no absences.

His living situation was a little more muddy, though -

For a while, he just stuck to motels as he didn't have a living space just yet. Apartment hunting took a backseat to his education, and in order to pay for it, he did whatever odd-end job he could find from Craigslist or Fiver. It seemed to work out, for the most part, until a friend he'd met in Recolle and had been talking to him for quite some time was able to hook him up with an apartment. It was originally meant to be a roommate situation for the two of them, however, her father refused to let her room with a boy and she had to move out.

They still keep in touch, and she pays the rent for it (since she knows Crow struggles with money and she's pretty well off, herself).

Crow spends a lot of his time either doing his odd-jobs around the city, earning him quite a reputation for helping out at the harbor and boardwalk, as well as doing plenty of deliveries. He's also very good with kids, and it's not uncommon to see him doing basic level magic tricks with his deck of cards (from his grandfather) to help keep them occupied if they're in line for something with him.

You can often find him at cafes around the city as well, playing solitaire, reading the classifieds, or listening to the music that independent musicians play. One in particular that he enjoys is Elliot Craig ([personal profile] fiddlestick) and he's more than once gotten him to sit down and play a round of cards with him.

AU PERSONALITY:
For all intents and purposes, Crow's personality in Recolle will mirror much of his past life's. He's just as friendly and open with people, and often connects best with those that seem to be on the less confident side. He's definitely someone who will be your cheerleader when you need it, and always come through for you should you need him. Despite his unreliable attendance at school and questionable hobbies, he will always be there to back you up in a pinch, and even more so protect you in any way he can.

He will, however, inherit his laid back side. This means he'll be just as good at slacking off on things that don't interest him (see: his gen eds) and try and skip class whenever he can.

That's not to say that Crow isn't serious. He does have his moments where he can take things seriously. And when that happens, he's often a good voice of reason. He's never an impulsive one, always taking things into account and trying to find the best possible answer (although... he isn't foolproof, and sometimes he can be shortsighted when it comes to what's acceptable losses. Nowhere near as bad as his C phase in canon). It's hard to rile him up or even upset him enough to yell, so if you ever have to confess something to someone, he's a good person to vent your anger or frustration to.

A good stress pillow, this one.

The one main difference, however, is that he will not be as revenge driven as he was in canon, as his grandfather didn't pass away in a tragic heartbroken state, nor did he lose everything like he did in his previous life. He's handled the whole situation quite well, actually, with his grandfather teaching him everything he needs to know to take care of himself, with the exception of telling him to surround himself with people who love him. Crow missed that little part, and it's something he's going to have to discover on his own. That's not to say that Crow isn't affected by his grandfather's death - it's certainly eating away at him inside - but he's not going to place the blame on anyone nor is he mad that his grandfather was taken way. It's your standard grief that's never been properly dealt with.

But the important thing is, he’s not revenge driven nor does he feel the need to ghost all his friends and run off to become a terrorist, and if he’s done any "activism," its your standard flavor of hashtags and not... say... going to the capitol to shoot a political figure. Just to name one vague, random example.

Crow, however, is an active feminist, and is surprisingly up to date on current social issues with today's society. While he may look like your typical dudebro, he's often one to side with a progressive outlook outwardly and openly, and isn't afraid to admit it. This is probably because of his friend he'd met over his first two years in Recolle, and even more so from his grandfather who didn't take any bullheaded opinions.

Crow did have a hard time making friends, however it was more out of a lack of joining any high school clubs or being able to properly connect with anyone after high school. He’ll also be more emotionally healthy, as his grandfather’s death didn’t have nearly as tragic of an impact on him other than leaving him alone, but he will be 18 by the time that happens. So while it’s not an ideal situation for a young man to have to deal with his last remaining nuclear family member passing away. At the very most he’ll be closed off in talking about his past (just like in canon), but it’s more out of not wanting people to look at him with pity/trying to keep himself strong.

He's just as good with kids as he is in his previous life as well, often making special time for them if they had questions while passing by or if they're getting antsy in the line at the store. His laid back personality makes him very easy to approach, and kids often connect to that easier than with some other adults who may not know how to talk to children.

Oh...and he does keep his gambling addiction. Sorry Recolle, he's going to be hitting up the casinos and scratch off cards and horse races. Especially since it's legal for him to do so now.
