[Rean was absolutely not expecting a reply, much less a series of replies. He's stunned as they come in, and Crow's left on read for a few minutes as Rean reads over them a couple of times to figure out what to say in response.
First, the obvious:]
I wasn't expecting you to still be up... I only am because my past life likes to hit me with fun new memories when I'm supposed to be resting. Hope you're not suffering through the same thing.
[And then another pause, hesitating, before he responds to the message itself.]
You don't need to thank me for it. I was serious with what I said back there, you know. ["I'm not letting you die."] But if you're okay with letting me "off the hook" then I guess we'll just call ourselves even?
Then go to sleep! You don't need to stay up for my sake. I wasn't expecting you to see this until morning, anyway
I don't know if I can make you any promises
But I'll try my best. Sorry I can't do better than that.
[The reality is, he just doesn't know what Retrospec will throw at them. And if something like this happens again, or something worse...]
Not shot, no. I don't really remember exactly what happened, I only woke up remembering a little bit of the conversation, but that part's clear
You were asking me if I even thought twice about what would happen if I got caught up in "that explosion," don't know what explosion you were talking about, and all I could tell you was I wasn't thinking at all
So, you know. Same deal, different lifetimes, turns out being an idiot is ingrained in my actual soul apparently, who knew.
[But Rean's recollection just earns a smile on his lips. There's something weirdly exciting about hearing someone else remember things you did. Even better if they match up perfectly to this life.
Souls are interesting things.]
So even back then you were giving me anxiety. Hope you're proud of yourself!
Haha, kidding, kidding
But man, that sure is fate, huh? It's like we're meant to look out for each other no matter what life
Then I wish you the best of luck on your waifu quest...
[Another story I heard about myself,]
Yeah, apparently so.
[He isn't proud at all, and the sad resignation with which he's thinking those words isn't something that can be easily carried across through text alone.
Perhaps for the best. He wouldn't want to worry Crow that much more, after all.]
But yeah... I think it is fate, finding each other again in this lifetime. Normally, I wouldn't put too much stock into that sort of thing, but... with you and I it feels like there are just too many things to write it all off as coincidence
Not too bad a thing to have written in the stars for me, I suppose
[He's so lucky. When all they can see is a screen, that means Crow will never know about the faint blush that's creeping into his cheeks.
Something a little more fated, huh? ...No, that's stupid, and he needs to stop that train of thought right where it is.]
I'd like to think that maybe fate's just a general guideline, here. So we can still make our own choices, still decide what's right for ourselves. But who knows?
Regardless, I'm happy for it, too. More than I can say
And you're damn right I'll keep looking after you... I'll just try not to be too much of a pain for you, haha
[And the second his thumb brushes the "send" button, he freezes, and suddenly he's not in his too-warm bed in his sweltering dorm room but out in the brisk night air, seated beside Crow.
"I do appreciate it, though." he finds himself saying. "My time here has definitely taught me how important a good friend can be. And..." Crow's head tilts a bit, inquisitively, at Rean's pause. "I consider you one of mine. I don't just look up to you because you're older than me, but because you're a good friend."
There's an ever-so-brief flash of shock through Crow's expression. What, did he really not see that coming? Still, it's enough to give Rean a moment's pause.
"...okay, maybe 'friend' is a little strong. 'Partner in crime' is more like it." Rean backpedals, and Crow's expression slips right back into his usual lazy smile.
"Partners in crime, huh? Not sure whether I should be offended or wear it with pride."
And then Rean's staring at the screen again, and Crow babbling about an some super rare waifu or whatever. Rean's not really focused on that, instead scrolling up a bit to read over the words that triggered the memory.
He laughs a little, and between tiredness and overwhelming nostalgia he can feel small tears misting at the corners of his eyes.]
Even that followed us here... we really were fated to find one another again.
Congrats on the pull. Don't know if you can really contribute that to me, but you're welcome anyway.

Nah, not this time
My mobage has a new banner up so I was grinding--guess I dozed off a little til you texted
...
It's appreciated, all things considered
Just don't do something like that again, alright? I swear, you scared the daylights out of me
[Rean, you are so lucky he has a soft spot for you.]
But what's this about 'changed at all'? Don't tell me you got shot before while I wasn't looking

But
That's good enough for me

Right
I've never been one for fate myself. It feels too planned, like you can't make your own choice in things
But
If it means looking after your butt, I'm more than happy to have that cross lifetimes
And you looking after mine, of course

Crow would never admit that his cheeks are a little pink too, his smile behind the screen all but fond.]
Heh, you're not a pain at all
We're both troublemakers it seems
Like
Partners in crime I guess?

Wait
What followed us here. Did you have another memory?
no subject
But if you insist, I can try to lend my apparent mystical powers to your waifu hunt
Ah, yeah. Just now. Sorry, everything's kind of happening all at once and it's late...
It's funny, though. I'm the one who called YOU that, before. You said you weren't sure whether to be offended or wear it with pride.
no subject
...
Huh. Maybe past me just already accepted it. I think a couple of troublemakers like us can agree it's the pride one
no subject
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was pride. Just usual teasing, as we do
Even if it wasn't, though, I'll wear that title with pride now.
no subject
But yeah, I think it's safe to say we're both proud of our status. Partners-in-crime across lifetmes
no subject
Yeah. I like the sound of it as much now as I did then.
